The Attorney-General's Department is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic graduates to join our 2018 Graduate Program. The Attorney-General's Department delivers programs and policies to maintain and improve Australia's law and justice framework, and strengthen our national security and emergency management. Through the Australian Government Solicitor, we also provide legal services to the Commonwealth, including legal advice and representation. Our 12 month graduate program offers exciting career development opportunities across two streams—policy and program stream and legal practice stream.

In the policy and program stream you will have the opportunity to demonstrate and strengthen your skills through three work rotations. You will have the opportunity to work in interesting policy areas such as human rights, administrative law, civil law, family law, criminal justice, national security, including cyber and identity security, or give legal advice on international law. You will also have the opportunity to assist with administering programs and providing services to support access to justice through legal assistance, or emergency management through national disaster recovery.

In the legal practice stream, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate and strengthen your skills through practice rotations—a client placement and a pro bono placement, as well as a structured learning and development program and practiced legal training. You will have an opportunity to provide legal advice to government across the full spectrum of its activities, including legislative development and interpretation, managing disputes, and corporate and commercial law issues covering a wide range of projects. I am very interested in applying for AusAID graduate program! Hope I have enough time to submit the app I need to look up the deadline for app submission. A personal experience of mine: I applied for a highly prestigious scholarship program back in 2008 to study overseas. Two AustralIans get chosen each year.

I didn't get it that year. I applied again in 2009 – didn't get it. I applied AGAIN in 2010 – and got it.

This experience had to be one of the biggest life lessons for me. Perseverance is key.

If you don't get something after the first try, just try again. Having said that, morale is hard to keep up in the face of competitive pursuits. Okay, maybe three thousand. I was exaggerating slightly:P But yeah, I think DFAT, AusAID, PM&C and the Defence programs (combined) get in over 2500 applicants each year, and only have between 20 and 50 positions available within the grad programs. It's disheartening, but I guess you just have to keep reapplying each year until you get in. Perseverance right?:) I believe DFAT got 2,400 this year for the first stage. This is my first time for AusAID, third time for DFAT (nearly got there last year) and second year for Defence.

This will probably be my last year applying for grad programs! But would I improve my chances if I'm more open to a sector stream, rather than just the Policy stream? I'd like to know the answer to this question too. I am really considering applying for the Sector Stream, and I've written up a response. But it's entirely based on volunteer stuff.
